February 22 - David Seidel
 
From JPL will discuss the launch of the Mars Rover landing.

The Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter are set to land on the surface of Mars on February 18. David Seidel, manager of the Education Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, will describe the landing events, show the very latest images from Mars, and describe the importance of this mission for two great quests of humanity, the search for life beyond Earth and human exploration of other worlds.

David Seidel is STEM Engagement Director and manager of the Education Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he leads a team creating transformational experiences for students and educators by leveraging the intrinsic interest in NASA missions of discovery.

He has been at JPL for thirty one years and, prior to joining JPL, David taught science and ran the planetarium at Beverly Hills High School, from where he graduated in 1977. He earned a BA in Geography from Cal State, Northridge and a Masters of Science degree in science education from USC.

David has received numerous group and individual achievement awards including the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal, and theAmerican Astronautical Society’s Sally Ride Excellence in Education Award. He has served as JPL’s lead NASA TV commentator for missions and has also flown on NASA’s “Weightless Wonder” aircraft, otherwise known as the Vomit Comet.

Beyond JPL, he was a member of the California Science Expert Panel for the Next Generation Science Standards and on the California State STEM Task Force convened by the State Superintendent. David is a member of the Technical Advisory Panel for the California Science Center’s Oschin Air and Space Center and served in a similar role for the Griffith Observatory’s renovation and expansion.

He is a City of Beverly Hills Traffic and Parking Commissioner and previously served as a Health and Safety Commissioner. His hobbies include mountain biking and skiing. He is on JPL’s Disaster Assistance Response Team and Emergency Amateur Radio Service, a BHPD disaster communications volunteer and a BHFD Community Emergency Response Team instructor.

February 8th - Dana Slatkin 
 
On Monday we were delighted to welcome Restauranteur and Master Chef Dana Slatkin who opened her talk, "Romance and Resilience in 2021", with a short tour of Violet Bistro located in Westwood Village.
 
Our first stop was at the bar to learn how to make the signature cocktail, a Violet Spritz. Our BH Rotary Club then headed up the stairs to the Cooking School with Violet's award-winning pastry chef Jeffrey Roselle to watch a demonstration of Violet Chocolate Honey Soufflés.
 
We also enjoyed Valentine's Day melodies by the talented Jeremy Wineglass, were inspired with a moment of kindness by our member and Human Relations Commissioner Rhoda Sharp, and saluted the flag led by Dr. Nazaz Pirnia.
 
February 1st - Ken Moelis
 
We were so fortunate to have Ken Moelis as our guest speaker to start February. Ken is the Founder, Chairman and CEO of Moelis & Company, a global independent investment bank. We were treated to Ken’s insight and perspective on COVID-19's implications on the global economy, as well as the political landscape, SPACs, and the current events on Wall Street.
 
January 25th - Dr. David Agus, MD
 
Dr. Agus, a professor of medicine and engineering at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine and Viterbi School of Engineering and the Founding Director and CEO of USC’s Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine, spoke on COVID-19 – Vaccines and Health. His information was extremely important, and Sharona placed the talk on the public cable. channel for the City of Beverly Hills (www.BeverlyHills.org/Live).
 
January 11th - Glenn Sonnenberg
 
Glenn spoke on “Musing from the Bunker; Why I Decided to Write my Way Through the Pandemic.
 
 
December 21st - Mike Karz
 
Mike has decades of experience as a film and Television producer and studio executive. He spoke on the Entertainment Industry: The More Things Change, The More Things Stay the Same.
 
December 14th - Holiday Party and Auction
 
 
Our 2020 Holiday Party was a huge success! A very special thank you to our fantastic and creative Event Chairs; Vicky Mense, Judie Fenton, Jr Dzubak, Offer Nissenbaum for all your hard work, our club is grateful for you. 
 
Thank you as well to all those involved in making this year’s party great; The beautiful Hon. Lili Bosse for our Flag Salute, President Sharona R. Nazarian, for a warm welcome and very moving inspirational moment, Fire Fighter Chad Beery, for signing a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem & The fabulous Bruce Meyer, our auctioneer for live auction.
 
Our featured entertainment for our 2020 Holiday Party was entertainer Jay Leno! He brought laughter and holiday cheer to all attendees with his 20-minute skit. In addition, we’d like to also thank the chef at the The Peninsula Beverly Hills for the amazing demonstration!

Real Estate Roundtable
 
Real Estate Roundtable this month will be on February 18th but will meet the 3rd Thursday of the month after that discussing current issues in area commercial and residential properties.

Wine Club
 
The wine club met virtually on January 21st for a wine tasting with the Herman Story. Winery in Paso Robles for red wines. Owner winemaker, Russell P. From, the group via Zoom to walk us through a tasting of his best four red wines and discussed their creation and curation.
 
Join us on Thursday, March 4th at 5pm for our second sensational wine tasting event this time featuring the delicious wines from Desparada Winery in Paso Robles.  This small boutique winery produces inspired elegant red and white wines (we'll be featuring both) at prices that are actually reasonably priced.  Our hostess for the tasting will be the winemaker and owner of Desparada, Vailia, who will share wonderful stories as we taste her delectable wines.  Each participant will receive four 4-ounce wines hand delivered to your home the afternoon of the tasting for $35 per person.  Prepare to be entertained while drinking some of California's finest wines. January Feature - Hand Sanitizer Distribution
Rotary Club of Beverly Hills, along with interactors from Beverly Hills High School and The Buckley School got together in a joint NEW YEAR project of kindness to donate over 1500 hundred individual hand sanitizers to protect our home town heroes; the BHPD & BHFD while in the community serving all of us.
 
They also provided extra hand sanitizers to distribute while out in the community to help promote health and safety measures during this pandemic on behalf of the Beverly Hills Rotary Club.
 
When it comes to serving others, there is no better way than seeing our youth working alongside adults to tackle a problem…united as one.
