Feeding the SoulFeeding the Soul is a Rotary project in partnership with the Beverly Hills Unified School District, making sure we provide HOT dinners to our neediest families. These families have been specifically identified in our city as low income. We are proud to be working with several restaurants, and our school district to provide these meals. We thank the Beverly Hills Market, the Palm, Xi'an, and the Nosh for their participation. You can make a contribution to the Rotary Club of Beverly Hills Community Foundation if you wish to help Feeding the Soul. For more information please contact President Michael Lushing at mlushing@gmail.com |

Weely Bulletin, August 1Monday, August 4, 2014 Elsa Gillham, District Governor 5280 visits our Club this Monday!! Inspired by the teachings of Chinese philosopher Confucius, who said “It is better to light a candle than to sit and curse the darkness”, President Gary CK Huang directs each of us to “Light Up Rotary” in 2014-15. What better way to do so than for “Each Club to be a VIBRANT Club” which is my one District Goal for this year. Imagine how our District with 62 VIBRANT Clubs and over 2400 members will "Light Up Rotary" by doing good, having fun and sharing Rotary. I am excited and honored to be your District Governor this coming year and along with my extraordinary team of experienced and dedicated district leaders, we are here to help you make your club a VIBRANT club. Together District 5280 clubs will “Light Up Rotary”! www.rotary5280.org A reading experience to bring the Beverly Hills Community together like never before. “The Boys in the Boat” by Daniel James Brown celebrates the 1936 U.S. men’s Olympic eight-oar rowing team—nine working class boys who stormed the rowing world, transformed the sport, and galvanized the attention of millions of Americans. The book’s message is that a small, diverse group of people, exceeding the strength of any single one of its members, can, by working together towards a common goal, accomplish great things. August 2, 2013PRESIDENTS REPORT. Our own Joe Longo had his brother Frank come down from Stanford to speak at our Club on Monday regarding Emerging Strategies for Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease. His presentation was enlightening regarding all the breakthroughs that are being done at his lab. We need to make sure we get out and exercise more to keep not only our bodies, but also our minds in shape.
And how about Adrienne Weise with little Lara Davies! I loved that we heard firsthand from a student of the Beverly Hills Academic Afterschool Tutoring Program describe the benefits she received from having a tutor. A number of our members currently participate in the tutoring program. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact adriennetutor@gmail.com or 310-285-6810.
LUNCH FEE/ATTENDANCE. Beginning this Monday, our lunch will cost $40 per members. Also, Attending meetings is one of the basic obligations a member accepts upon joining Rotary. Let’s see our numbers increase. Absence of any member deprives the Club of the value of its membership, the contributions to ongoing Club projects, and the personal fellowship of each member.
PROGRAM FOR AUGUST 5, 2013. Our speaker this Monday, August 5 is Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy “Lee” Baca. Sheriff Baca was born in East Los Angeles. Sheriff Baca joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1965, and rose through the ranks to the position of chief. In 1998, he was elected Sheriff of the County of Los Angeles. Sheriff Baca has expanded the Sheriff’s Department from 14,000 to 18,000 employees through progressive, constitutionally based values; innovation, creativity and public trust programs. These 18,000 sworn and professional staff provide law enforcement services throughout Los Angeles County to forty-two incorporated cities, 140 unincorporated communities, nine community colleges, and thousands of Metropolitan Transit Authority and Rapid Rail Transit District daily commuters. He founded the LASD University program to improve the college education of his employees. Sheriff Baca also founded the first Education-Based Incarceration Program in the nation, which ensures a path to re-entry for all inmates.

BHHS Interact ClubOn June 9, 2013, Interact District 5280 held its Aloha Brunch at the Hacienda Hotel to recognize the achievements of the Interactor’s during the 2012-2013 school year. At the brunch, our own Nicole Sayegh was named an Assistant Governor of Interact District 5280 for the upcoming year. Interact is Rotary’s service club of youth ages 12-18. The goals of Interact include developing leadership skills and personal integrity, demonstrating helpfulness and respect for other, understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work, and advancing international understanding and goodwill.
With close to 200 attendees, all District Interact clubs were represented. For the BHHS Interact Club, in attendance were Nicole, Isaac Rosenthal, Mayan Maryamian, Chelsea Simmons, Samantha Smith and Jan Pak along with Adam Heller, who is the incoming VP of New Generations, Les Bronte who is Chair of the Interact Club and myself. I was inspired hearing these young men and women described the achievements they made during the year which included raising funds for Uganda Aid Relief, Canned Food Drives, Book Buddies, Lupus LA, National Pancreatic Society, just to name a few. In addition, they discussed the wonderful events they held during the year and RYLA, the Rotary Youth Leadership Award weekend. The 2012-2013 BHHS Interact Club’s membership increased to over 100 members. This is in part thanks to the leadership of Nicole and her board of directors. We are all proud of the work she has accomplished this year – and we look forward having her again as president for 2013-2014. Per Past RI President Luis Vicente Giay, “Our vision for the future, now more than ever, is the difference between success and failure. The New Generations are our investment in the future. Let us begin to build that future today.” |

President-Elect MessageI hope you all enjoyed Monday's Vocational Service Awards to our Police, Fire and Postal Workers. Vocational service is the second of Rotary's four Avenues of Service. Through Vocational service, Rotarians are expected to adhere to and promote high ethical standards in all their business dealings, recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, and contribute their professional expertise and skills to addressing societal problems and needs.
Thank you to Captain Tony Lee, Chief Timothy Scranton, City Manager Jeff Kolin and Postmaster Koula Fuller for selecting employees that exemplify the high standards by setting positive examples among employees, associates and the community in general. Additional thanks to the Sidney and Dorothy Factor Family Foundation and the Novak Fund that allows our Club to reward our City and Postal employees with this honor.

District Trip to PanamaPast President Brad Robinson is serving as Assistant Governor for International Service for our District. Brad is organizing the District trip to Panaman this January 18-21. Details can be seen by linking here. This is preliminary because planning is still occuring with the Panamanian Clubs to finalize the projects. There will be some shuffling around, and maybe even some additions or deletions, but this is what is planned as of now. If you have received an application the deadline for sumitting the application and down payment is Friday November 9th.. Several excursions are planned for every day. While Rotarians are encouraged to go on as many project trips as possible, the excursions will be attractive for spouses and families, and everyone can attend any excursion, including Rotarians. There also will be excursions available for Rotarians (and their families) before and after the "formal" trip dates. We are currently working on the cost of the trip. The cost will include airfare, double-occupancy hotel, transportation and all lunches and dinners. While the cost may change some our current estimate per person is $1,285. |
